A Message From Our CEO

In Chamber Blog by admin

Dear Members,

The Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce (Chamber) believes we must move forward together to create a more equitable future for our region. The Chamber articulated our values in an Inclusivity Statement shared with all members last month.

Earlier this year, the Chamber invited candidates for statewide office to join us for an ongoing “Policy Series” lunch for members to get to know candidates ahead of next year’s elections. In February 2020, Senator Amanda Chase (11th District - Midlothian) announced her candidacy for Governor of Virginia. She was subsequently invited to participate in the Chamber‘s “Policy Lunch” series and the event was scheduled for this month. Recent statements Senator Chase made run contrary to our values and our invitation has been rescinded. As we wrote in our Inclusivity Statement:

"Our strength is grounded in truly reflecting the diversity of our community and advocating for an inclusive business climate that creates equitable access for all to thrive. The dual pandemics of COVID-19 and racism have disproportionately impacted Black communities and businesses around the world and in our region. Your Chamber and its Executive Committee condemn discrimination of any kind. It has no place in our community and is in contradiction with our mission and strategic plan." As we said then, "While our hearts are heavy now, we are optimistic about our future and, working together, we will build a better future for our region."

Sincerely,

Julie Coons
