NOVA Leads is a leadership enrichment and development program developed in partnership between the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce and Northern Virginia Community College. The curriculum is delivered over the course of 8 monthly sessions and has been developed with next-generation leaders and rising-star employees in mind.

This course is available exclusively to members of the Northern Virginia Chamber and their employees.

Live Online Sessions

Sessions are from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM with an hour break for lunch the second Tuesday of each month, September 2021 – March 2022.

Investment

$2,450.00 per person and includes instructional materials and a capstone luncheon.

Session 1

Sept 14, 2021

Leading Self, Leading Others. Orientation and welcome. Leading Self: A personality inventory will be used to identify how your preferences affect your behavior in work and life. You’ll develop an awareness of your strengths and how to leverage the strengths of your team. Leading Others: Discover the nuances between leadership and management, create your leadership philosophy and identify values you’ll use to lead others. Explore the five people skills you need to know.

Oct 12, 2021

Introduction to Lean Process Improvement. Participants will be introduced to lean process improvement and cover benefits of lean management, fundamentals and core principles of lean methodology, and using lean mindset to drive transformation.

Session 3

Nov 9, 2021

Indispensable Business Topics. Leaders rely on several foundational concepts regularly. In this session, participants will cover topics that contribute greatly to success: strategic planning, building an environment of trust, developing intentional organizational culture and time management skills.

Session 4

Dec 14, 2021

Beyond Basic Leadership - Adaptive Leadership. What is adaptive leadership and what are the attributes of an adaptive leader? This session explores a follower-based approach to leadership and delves into growth mindsets, systems thinking, creative conflict, and reframing situations with an adaptive leader approach.

Session 5

Jan 11, 2022

Everyone Does HR. No matter where you are in an organization, human resources skills are needed regularly. Participants will cover four fundamental conversations to have with direct reports, managing and developing direct reports, promoting a positive work environment, and fundamentals and key laws of HR in this session.

Session 6

Feb 8, 2022

Managing Change and Conflict, Building Teams. The first half of this session presents recognizing signs of conflict, strategies to deal with conflict, and leading and managing change. The second half of the session will focus on team-building strategies for high-performing teams.

Session 7

Mar 8, 2022

Communications for Development. This session presents various aspects of communication, including communicating with impact, active listening skills, influence without authority, collaboration skills, asking powerful questions and the importance of what your personal branding is communicating about you.

Session 8

Apr 12, 2022

Capstone and Graduation. Half-day program presentations: participants present for 10 minutes on one of three program reflection assignments. Participants may invite a supervisor.
